Sports Club

Welcome to our Sports Page!

After another very successful year of being awarded School Games Award Gold for 2018-2019 we continue to increase the variety of school sports clubs and competitions available.  In the academic year September 2019 to March 2020 we introduced archery, yoga, judo, fencing, handball, ninja warriors and cheerleading into our sporting calendar of clubs.

From March 2020 until March 2021, we stopped our extra-curricular sporting club calendar due to Covid-19, guidance from the government and AfPE. However, in April 2021, we began to introduce sporting clubs back into our curriculum; Y6 archery, Y5 football, Y6 football and Y6 netball. Our aim in 2021-2022 is to return to our normal programme of sports.

We continue to have the support from Sportscubed and the wider community to coach our after school clubs.

Sport Clubs

Throughout the school year we have a variety of sporting clubs taking place.  They include tag rugby, netball, girls and boys football, tennis, dance, ninja warriors, archery and Wally Cain. More clubs will be added to our sporting programme throughout the year.

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 can join in with a Tuesday lunchtime 'get moving' club up on our school play deck.

Sporting Events

Competition and Festivals

All of the children at Birkdale Primary School are encouraged to take part in sporting events .  We are part of North Sefton School Games (NSSG) and enter as many sporting events as we can throughout the school year.  Our children were incredibly successful last year (2020-2021) winning lots of medals and certificates for their amazing achievements. Our highlights were winning the Year 6 gymnastics competition and being runners-up with our Year 4 duo. We were crowned MERSEYSIDE CHAMPIONS at the pentathlon event after winning a staggering 13 events across Y1 to Y6.  Reception children entered a dance festival on the theme 'Friendship' dancing to the music 'A gift from a friend' from Disney's Tinkerbell and across the school had endless success with our personal challenges. We really had an overwhelming year of success!

Personal Challenge

At the start of each term, all children complete a physical personal challenge as set by NSSG.  The highest scores are compared against children from other schools in North Sefton and the children with the highest or fastest score are awarded with medals and certificates from our North Sefton School Games Organiser.

Leadership in Physical Education and Physical Activity

Playground Activity Leaders

We have a group of 20 children from Years 3 to 6 who have been trained by our North Sefton School Games Organiser to become a Playground Activity Leaders (PAL).  Their role is to lead in the provision of playground physical activity, supporting and encouraging children to join in and have fun while being physically activity at break time. Every year group has a bag of sports equipment to use from bats and balls, dodgeballs, badminton rackets through to croquet sets.  We even have an outdoor table tennis table to use everyday.

Sports Leaders

Our sports leaders play an important role within our PE curriculum.  They are involved in the planning and implementation of sports day through to supporting the PE leaders with the programme of extra curricular activities.
