PE

Physical Education at Birkdale Primary School

‘Attainment through caring, challenge and creativity'

Our Curriculum Intent

We provide a Physical Activity and a Physical Education curriculum that develops the whole child.

We want our children to enjoy being physically active, to improve fitness levels and to enjoy sport in later life.

We ensure that children develop respect and discipline through physical activity that promotes and encourages leadership skills through the wider experiences of our PE curriculum, sporting events and competitions.

Our PE leaders in school are Mrs Eden and Mr Gallagher.  Mr Murphy is our full-time sports coach who as well as our class teachers, teaches PE to our children in Nursery through to Year 6, supports our SEND and PP children through the delivery of fun and engaging sporting activities and ensures that our children are prepared for the events and competitions that we enter as part of North Sefton School Games.

In 2024 and 2025 we were awarded PLATINUM school Games Mark. This is such a huge achievement but an award we are very proud to have been awarded.

Please follow our sporting achievements on X @BirkdalePSSport

Early Years Foundation Stage

In Nursery and Reception, children continuously have the opportunity to be physically active whether this is through daily outdoor play sessions or when taking part in weekly PE sessions.  Learning outcomes are referenced to the Development Matters 2020 in the Early Years Foundation Stage through the prime areas of Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

By the end of the Reception (ELG's), pupils will be taught how to;

*Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others.

*Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing.

*Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

The fundamental movement skills are; skipping, running, throwing, catching, striking, rolling, hopping, kicking, balancing and jumping. Curriculum links will also be made to PSED, the whole child.

Key Stage One

Key stage 1 Pupils are taught to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They are given the opportunity to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils are taught to:

•master basic movements (on both the dominant and non dominant side of the body) including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

•participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending

•perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage Two

Key stage 2 Pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils are taught to:

•use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination

•play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

•develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

•perform dances using a range of movement patterns

•take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

•compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Swimming and water safety

Pupils in year 3 and 4 are taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

We use 'getset4PE' as our whole school PE scheme.  Lessons in EYFS and KS1 focus on the teaching of fundamental skills and in KS2, children apply their sporting skills to a wide variety of competitive sports.

PE Uniform

Please can you ENSURE your child comes to school on their assigned PE days wearing the appropriate kit. The PE uniform is as follows:

INDOOR PE UNIFORM - a BPS logo/plain white round neck t-shirt, royal blue shorts and black pumps.

OUTDOOR PE UNIFORM - a BPS logo/plain white round neck t-shirt, royal blue shorts, royal blue BPS hoodie, royal blue tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

All hair longer than shoulder-length must be tied back and earrings removed or covered up for safety reasons.

PE Ambassadors

A huge well done to Ava and Ethan, who were proudly elected as our new PE Ambassadors at the     beginning of this term. They have already made a fantastic start in their roles.

Their growing list of responsibilities includes:

· Helping to hand out letters for sports events

· Tidying and organising the PE cupboard

· Collecting pupil voice to find out what each year group enjoy about PE and sport at our school

They have shown excellent leadership and responsibility so far, and we are excited to see how they  continue to support and inspire our school.
